Last day of school

28 augustus 2015 - York, Verenigd Koninkrijk

This was really my last day at English In York.

In the morning class we began with the test. It was really not what we all expected. We thought that it would focus on grammar and vocabulary, but it focussed really on the chapter itself. The first question was “What was the title of the module (chapter)?”… Uhm… I don’t know; I focused on other things. But I did read the chapter again last night, so I was able to fill in a lot of things. I did – according to the teacher – an excellent job. When he gave me my certificate (yeah!) and said goodbye to me, he said that I was an excellent student and that he had enjoyed having me in the class. Well, that is a compliment!

We had a small group today in the afternoon lesson, because the Arabic students go to the mosque on Friday. It was just the two German students, Monica and I. But it was still a good lesson. We had to do a lot of talking again. This time we had to remember something we learned at school or at the university/college, teach that to another student and then tell what you have learned to yet another student. That was quite difficult, because you had to remember what the other one told you. I did not make it very easy for them (I already said ‘sorry’), because I chose the subject ‘literary theory’.  It was a good lesson.

After that I said ‘goodbye and thank you for everything’ to the people of the school and walked out for the last time. It was a good and valuable experience.

After school Inés, Monica, Kazuki and I went to a tearoom, called Betty’s. That is the best and apparently also very famous. The tearoom was very English. And expensive, but the tea was good and plenty. It was nice to do something with everyone for the last time. Monica is also going back home tomorrow, Inés is here for another week and Kazuki for a bit longer. I am happy to have met them. We had a good time together.

My last dinner was nice: pasta with tuna, warm bread and salad. But the dessert was really nice: a piece of Diam cake. That tasted really good. And a cup of tea of course. After the dinner I watched TV together with Norma and Richard (and Kay for a while). We watched ‘Don’t tell the bride’ and a very interesting French series: ‘Résistance’.

Now I am going to sleep in my English room for the last time. Have breakfast here for the last time. After that I will take one last bus trip to the city centre and walk around. See the Yorkshire Museum and the gardens. Shop for the last souvenirs. Admire the Minster for a last time. Say goodbye to York.

I will be sad to leave, but I will remember this as a good experience, that made me grow in so many ways. I thank everyone for what they did for me and will always remember this.
